Happy New Year! I hope you all had restful breaks full of family and friends. We are now in the second half of the year and the end of the year will be upon us before we know it! There are many important reminders in today’s newsletter, but the most important is that the Winter MAP Tests are this coming week! These test results are included in decisions the district makes about placement in advanced classes at TMS. The students will be taking the Math MAP on Wednesday afternoon and the Reading MAP on Friday morning. Make sure the students come to school well rested and ready to take on the test!
We finished up plenty of units before Winter Break! As we finished up our Social Studies Unit, the students worked very hard to record their Kid Friendly Translation of the Declaration of Independence. Every student participated and they did a great job! View the video here! We finished Unit 5 in Math and then focused on Fractions in Food just in time for the holidays. In Reading, we finished up the Fiction unit and took our Celebration of Learning before the break. As writers, we focused in on using evidence from the text to support our thinking. We also continued to work on homonyms, homophones, and homographs during Grammar time!
In the coming weeks we will switch back to Science and focus on Energy. I am very excited to get back to some hands-on experiments and discovery-based learning! As we approach the middle of our year, we will be starting The Liberation of Gabriel King unit in Writing while coupling it with the nonfiction text Freedom Walkers. Working on both texts at the same time will allow students to polish up their fiction and nonfiction skills we have learned during reading while focusing on using evidence from the text during Writing. In Math, we will be starting Unit 6 with a review of recording, graphing, and interpreting data from number sets.
-MAP Tests on Wednesday and Friday!
-Mrs. Bingaman’s Friday Packet has a lot of important information about Gator Rock, PARCC Results, Jump Rope for Heart, and most importantly for you, 5th Grade Transition Nights for Incoming 5th Graders at TMS! Make sure to put those dates in your planner!
