The past two weeks have flown by as we finished up some units and prepared for progress reports and conferences! We passed the “60 school days” milestone this past week as well as had our Star Party to celebrate positive choices. Dr. Martinez, our School Psychologist, also stopped by to teach us about brain development and how to understand ourselves as learners! Thank you for filling out your “Parent Homework” pink sheets to let me know what you would like to discuss during our meeting. By now, you should have had an opportunity to review your child’s progress reports and comments. If you have any questions, I’d be happy to discuss them during our conference time. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you before the holiday to discuss your child’s progress!
Over the past two weeks, students finished up Unit 4 in Math and now have many division strategies to help them solve problems. After the test, students used the Explain Everything app to teach the algorithms in a video. We focused on writing detailed instructions for creating a “human sculpture” and the results were fantastic (and a little silly)! We studied the Declaration of Independence and rewrote it using modern day similes, such as a worker quitting his job. We also learned to “be careful what we wish for” as we finished up The Wish Giver by Bill Brittain. We also applied our knowledge of figurative language (idioms and hyperboles) to the rules of wish giving as we analyzed the literature.
After a relaxing week filled with family and friends, the students will come back to plenty of exciting things! We will be starting our Science unit on Water; hands-on, inquiry-based science, here we come! During Reading time we will take a break from our novels and explore poetry. Students will sharpen their convincing skills as they work on persuasive writing. We will also launch into the exciting world of fractions during Math!
-Conferences are tomorrow and Tuesday! You should have already received your Sign Up Genius reminder email. If you need a reminder of your conference time, please feel free to email me.
