Hello 5th Grade Families!
Welcome to Spring in 5th grade! We have so many exciting and important events coming up, including World of Work, PARCC Testing, Thomas Middle School Tour, Robert Crown, and so much more! Be sure to check Backpack Mail for important permission slips as they come home.
PARCC Test Reminders
Fifth graders will be testing on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 9:30am this week! You should have received a paper copy of this Parent Letter with reminders and our adjusted Specials schedule during PARCC. Students have permission to bring in their own mint or cinnamon flavored mints or gum during PARCC testing. Students also have permission to bring in a pillow to sit on during PARCC tests so they can be comfortable.
Last week, we continued learning about Fractions by moving into Unit 8 and studying how to add and subtract mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators. We also began learning about how to strengthen our persuasive writing by studying ethos, logos, and pathos. In Social Studies, we learned about all of the important jobs the Second Continental Congress had at the onset of the American Revolution. In Reading, we continued to read and enjoy poetry from all genres and formats and we explored how to respond to the big idea of poetry.
PARCC Testing begins this week! There will be no homework on PARCC testing days so that students can be well rested for the tests. This week, we will continue to learn about fractions by learning how to multiply and divide with them in different settings. In Reading, we will explore figurative language and theme in poems. In Social Studies, we will begin studying how America’s militia was able to defeat Britain during the Revolutionary War!
