What an exciting week we had in 5th Grade! We finished up CogAT testing on Friday and the students did a wonderful job giving their best effort. We also celebrating the 100th Day of School with a little reflection and celebration on Wednesday! On Thursday, we had our Book Launch Party for The Moment: a collection of short stories written and illustrated by our class. If you would like to order more copies of the book, just use the code on the back of the book on this website to order more copies. If you missed ordering the first time, just email me and I’d be happy to give you the class code! It is an amazing work of art and the students are so proud of it! We also ended the week with a fabulous Valentine’s Day party! Thank you to all of our parent volunteers! Don’t forget to check out our classroom Twitter account for daily updates and photos from all of the fun events in our classroom!
The students did an amazing job with Hands-On Algebra so far! We finished up the first short unit and will continue into the second unit in this coming week. We also changed up Spelling in order to allow students more time with the teacher before their tests; now all tests will take place on Mondays. In Reading, we read through the climax of the book and then spent some time doing some close reading of an amazing civil rights song written by John Legend and Common. It was a really challenging and engaging activity for the students after taking the CogAT. In Science, we continued to design the best insulators possible and tested them in ice water!
We will be taking a turn in Science for the next week as the students prepare to create their own Rube Goldberg Machines! They are so excited for this opportunity to create and learn through experience! In Math, we will take a quiz tomorrow and then spend the rest of the week working with negative numbers and negative variables. In Writing and Grammar we will focus on prefixes and suffixes while also applying our knowledge of writing with evidence to multiple sources. In Reading we will get close to finishing Liberation as the students study elements of a story and thematic elements.
