I was only able to spend two days with the students last week due to the long weekend and my being out sick on Friday! I am so happy to get back to our routine and spend a full week together!
In our shortened week, students expanded their knowledge of figurative language with hyperbole and personification. We also continued to work on our response to fiction while reading The Liberation of Gabriel King. The students are becoming very strong writers who can skillfully use evidence from the text. We also finished up Unit 6 in Math with addition and subtraction of fractions and then had our Celebration of Learning on Friday. In Science, the students learned that cold is the absence of heat energy, which is a concept we will further explore this week.
This week, we will be exploring conductors and insulators in Science as we further explore heat energy. We will also be moving into Unit 7 in math which focuses in on Order of Operations and some pre-algebra concepts (variable, negative numbers, etc.). The students are now at the point of refining their writing skills and we move into longer form writing responses in multiple paragraphs. In Reading, we will read more of Freedom Walkers and The Liberation of Gabriel King as we work on skills that focus on analyzing character traits, conflict, and vocabulary. We will also be having a special Coding lesson with Mrs. Fajks this week!
-Our Erin’s Law Sexual Abuse Education presentation will be on Monday (2/1). If we do not receive an opt-out form, your child will participate in the schedule presentation from Mrs. Silva. More info from the district can be found here.
-Maker Club Permission Slips are in my room for any 5th graders who would like to join!
