We finished up anther exciting week in 5th grade; between the excitement in our novel and the Science Test (Which the students ROCKED!) we have had more than our fill of fun. The upcoming week will be even more fun as we celebrate our first 30 days of our Best Year Ever! With the first 30 days under our belt, our students will reflect on their choices up to this point and think about who they want to be in the next thirty days. We will also discuss our class norms and consequences to remind students of the expectations in fifth grade. We also have our FIELD TRIP to Olive on Thursday. Students need to bring a sack lunch on Thursday because we will eat early to get to the Revolutionary War activities on time.
Last week, we finished up our unit on the Human Body with a Celebration of Learning. The students lived up to the high standards of the assessment and were very successful on Friday afternoon. In Math, we had our first week with Math Workshop style learning on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The students are able to receive personalized re-teaching or extensions based on their needs, which is allowing all students to be successful. Wow! We learned about Interjections all week during Grammar time! In Writing, our focus on setting details involved writing about a fantastic setting in complete detail. My Brother Sam is Dead sparked some wonderful discussion as the main character struggled with the ideals and reality that war brings to an average town during the Revolutionary War. The students have become experts in using the FACES model to construct PARCC-style written responses with evidence.
In our four-day week before the weekend, we are going to pack a lot in! We will explore subjects and predicates in Grammar and still plan to take our Spelling test on Thursday! In Math, we will finish learning about multiplication strategies, and then review before the test. We will start our Social Studies on the Birth of Our Nation starting with the Boston Tea Party. This will start to give the behind-the-scenes information on our novel, My Brother Sam is Dead. In Writing, we will continue to give our best effort at becoming authors who can create a picture in a reader’s head with details and figurative language.
