November is already speeding past! Our 5th Grade Field Trip is coming up soon on the 17th and permission slips are due back this Tuesday (11/10)! We are going to have so much fun at Sunrise Lake working on team building and leadership skills. Make sure students either order a lunch on their permission slip or bring their own paper bag lunch. We will be spending the whole day at Sunrise Lake, so make sure students dress for the weather!
Many students are doing a great job working towards their Biblionasium goal for Reading class! All students set their own weekly reading goal and have signed a contract based upon the amount of minutes they will read and log online every week. They should be working toward their reading goals every night! Ask your student what his or her personal goal is for their independent reading time.
Over the past two weeks, the students have accomplished a lot! We finished up Unit 3 on Geometry and then moved on to Unit 4 on Division. If you would like to understand the Partial Quotients algorithm, click here. If you would like to understand the traditional long division algorithm, click here. The students are responsible for knowing both algorithms and choosing the best one for them to use in a division problem. In Social Studies, students finished up Unit 10 with a quiz and we began learning about Patriot, Loyalist, and Neutralist viewpoints leading up to the Revolutionary War. In Reading, we analyzed nonfiction text structures, used context clues to determine meaning, and categorized main idea and details. As writers, the students began their personal narratives which will be their final graded story about a moment from their lives.
The students have a lot to finish up this week! In Math, we will have a quick quiz on whole number division before moving on to division of decimals. In Reading, we will finish up the Nonfiction Reading Unit this week and take a culminating assessment on all of the skills they have gained so far. In Language Arts, students have taken their time to polish up their personal narratives; they will be in final draft form ready to publish by the end of the week! In Social Studies, we will finish earning about famous Patriots and Loyalists and then begin our Chapter 11 projects. During Genius Hour, students will soon be coming to the end of their learning journey and begin preparing for our Sharing Day right before Thanksgiving break!
