This was a week full of amazing effort and positive attitudes. The students are really starting to own their 5th grade role model attitudes! This week will continue to be full of exciting activities including Picture Day! Make sure the students come prepared on Tuesday to get their pictures taken! Monday is also the International Day of Peace and Greenbrier will be celebrating with the #Chalk4Peace movement! See the Reminders section for more details. This Friday, ScootPad parent log in information went home in Take Home Folders. There are log in credentials for your student to keep at home, as well as instructions to create your own account to monitor your child’s progress in Common Core Math and English Language Arts skills. This is a program students will be using throughout the year to keep their skills sharp. In the coming weeks, I will also be sending home additional Parent Information for other online programs we will be using this year including Prodigy, SeeSaw, and Spelling City. Please check Take Home Folders or email me for more information.
This week we had our first Celebration of Learning in Math class! The students finished Unit 1 and will be taking home their graded tests this week. We finished up Spelling training and the students are now ready to dive into the workshop model during Spelling time. As writers, we focused on adding sensory details so that the reader can fully experience the “movie” in their minds. In Reading, students worked more on their Literature Discussion skills as they practiced active listening and how to contribute to a conversation. In Science, students learned about the nervous system and then took our mini Celebration of Learning on Friday afternoon.
This week, we will move into Unit 2 in Math, which focuses on multiplication skills with whole numbers and decimals. We will also continue to learn about ourselves as readers while having literature discussions and learning comprehension skills. In Science, we will learn about the respiratory and circulatory systems. Students will start work on their individualized Spelling lists and begin studying Grammar and Mechanics in depth. We are also really starting to dig into Genius Hour this week and students will be solidifying their big questions!
