I hope all of you enjoyed this beautiful Labor Day weekend. We had a very busy week and the students have certainly earned a break! During the past few days, we came together as a team of learners who are all working towards having our Best Year Ever! As a class, we got to know each other and took the pledge to work towards that common goal all year long. Thank you very much to all of the parents who came to Parent Night, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions this year. Also, don’t forget to check out our Twitter for photos from the week!
As the week progressed, we slowly added more curriculum to our activities and the students have adjusted very well! The 5th Grade Common Core Standards can be very rigorous, but I know our students can handle it. In Math, we reviewed our math facts, practiced arrays, and learned about the Communitive Property! The students also came up with some incredibly insightful thoughts on why math is so important to our lives. In Science, we discussed what it meant to be a scientist and began to use our skills to observe how the human body responds to exercise. We also learned about the various types of joints in the body. The students have begun writing narrative fiction and have had an opportunity to show me who they are as writers this week. In Reading, we explored who we are as readers and began practicing the Reader’s Workshop model in our classroom.
This upcoming week will be a busy one! In Math we will be reviewing many familiar concepts as well as introducing and practicing new ones. We will be exploring factors, divisibility rules, prime/composite numbers, square numbers, and exponents. We will start our Words Their Way Spelling routines. This week, the whole class will work on a practice list in order to discuss and practice Spelling routines. In Writing, students will continue to hone their narrative skills as they begin to focus in on specific moments in detail. As Scientists, we will study how our bones move and design our own working model of a human joint! In Reading, we will continue to work in Reader’s Workshop routines as we learn more comprehension skills.
