Our Best Year Ever is coming to a close! We only have a few weeks left before graduation on June 8th! Please look for more information on the promotion ceremony in your child’s backpack mail this week after Mr. Murray and I finalize the details. Please read on for more information about upcoming tests, important days, and 5th grade special events!
We finished up Unit 9 and took our Celebration of Learning on Friday! In Science, the students applied their knowledge of conductors and insulators to design a water bottle protector, which will slow the loss of heat when put in an ice bath. We are very excited to test them on Monday! In Reading, we went on the exciting ride through the last few chapters of Among the Hidden. We finished this novel, but it is only the first book of the Shadow Children series! If your child liked this novel, consider providing them with the opportunity to finish the rest of the series by buying or checking out the next books in the series. In Writing, the students have finished polishing up their short stories by adding extra detail to make their characters come to life.
In Math, we will be teaching a truncated version on Unit 10, and then the last week of school the students will have a chance to do a cross-classroom activity incorporating all of the skills they learned all year. In Science, we will have AP Chemistry students from Hersey coming to help teach our students on Monday! Then we will test our bottle inventions and prepare for the Science Celebration of Learning on Wednesday. In Reading, we will begin our final project for the book, which will focus on demonstrating comprehension of the text through writing with specific, character-based bias from the book. In Writing, the students will completely finish their final drafts of their short stories!
-This week we will have an unannounced Hard Lock Down drill. I have reviewed all of the procedures with the students, but if you have any questions, please feel free to call me.
-You have already received information from the district on the placement process for advanced classes in middle school via email and backpack mail. All 5th grade students will take the Advanced Math placement test on Monday morning unless they are already in Advanced Math. If you do not wish to have you students participate in the test, you must contact me to have your child opt out of the process. The students who have been selected to take the Advanced Language Arts test have already been notified they will be taking the test on Wednesday. If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to call or email me.
-Thursday is our 5th Grade Field Trip! Make sure your students wear socks for bowling!
-Check out Mrs. Bingaman’s Friday Packet!
-There is no school on Friday or Monday! Enjoy the long weekend!
