I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend! The upcoming week is especially exciting because World of Work is finally here! Read on to see what is expected on Thursday.
This Thursday morning, the 5th grade students will be getting their first glimpse of the adult world by working in Downtown Arlington Heights. The students worked very hard last week to make sure they had professional resumes and answers to interview questions. Mr. Murray and I have worked hard to make best-fit matches with businesses so that each student has an enjoyable day. The bus will be leaving right at the start of the day on Thursday morning, so please make sure your student gets to school with enough time to settle in and feel prepared for the day. All students should wear his/her 5th grade T-shirt and professional, work-appropriate bottoms. No jeans or sweatpants should be worn! Students are welcome to bring a change of clothes for the afternoon if they do not want to wear their professional clothes all day. We will be eating lunch at Dunton House, so there is no need to send a lunch with your child on Thursday. We encourage all family members and friends to come visit the students at the businesses on Thursday!
This week, we finished up Unit 7 in Math and took our Celebration of Learning! In Reading, we began our unit on the novel, Among the Hidden. The students are already sucked into the story and we are identifying elements of stories and learning some interesting vocabulary in the process. In Writing, we focused on the authentic work of writing resumes and answering interview questions for World of Work. In Social Studies, we finished up the Constitution and Bill of Rights and took our quiz. We then launched our Westward Expansion unit and are working through a research-style unit while collaborating with Mr. Murray’s class.
We will continue to read Among the Hidden while learning about tone, mood, and elements of a story. In Math, we will be focusing in on fractions as we work through Unit 8 of Everyday Math. In Writing, we will start focusing in on the creative writing process. In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about Westward Expansion and the different perspectives on the Manifest Destiny philosophy. This week is also Everybody Counts Week in addition to being the exciting World of Work week!
