We have had a short, but lovely first week back! The students have already had two snow days and two MAP tests! With all of these things adjusting our class schedule, I am thankful to have a room full of 5th graders who are flexible and always willing to have a positive attitude. Make sure to scroll down to the Reminders section! There are many exciting things happening in January!
We have started many new units in January! In Math, we have taken a break from Everyday Math in order to learn Algebra from Hands-On Equations. The curriculum takes the abstract and intimidating nature of Algebra and turns it into an accessible and exciting adventure. The students are catching on quickly! In Science, the students are continuing to learn about the Water Cycle and the important role water plays in our lives. For Reading and Writing time, we are working on an integrated unit on the civil rights movement in the United States. Currently we are working on reading the nonfiction book Freedom Walkers to build background knowledge. The book takes a very honest look at the civil rights movement and will help students prepare for our upcoming historical fiction novel.
We will continue to learn how to manipulate and solve algebraic equations in Math class. For our Civil Rights unit, students will continue to read and respond to nonfiction sources as we prepare to read the historical fiction novel, The Liberation of Gabriel King. Both books take a very honest look at the civil rights movement in America and confront some tough issues such as racism, protests, and violence. If you have any specific questions about the content of these books, please email me and I would be happy to answer them. In Science we will continue learning about the water cycle and even make a classroom glacier! This week is going to be full of excitement!
