Hello Room 234 Families!
It was so nice to have the students for a full five days this week! In addition to having a full week of exciting learning, some students took the opportunity to be trained as Buddy Readers for the Kindergarten Communications students. Any 5th graders who took some time to speak with Mrs. Belew during lunch this week, will be put in a calendar rotation to be Buddy Readers with the Kindergarten Communications students. They will have the opportunity to go downstairs and read a children’s book with a student. This will help foster relationships and increase fluency for all students who participate!
This week we will also have our Halloween Parade and Party! Please read Mrs. Bingaman’s Halloween Info in the Friday Packet and be sure to return the orange Halloween attendance sheet to help us prepare! The Room Reps also sent home a list of all ingredients for food being served at the party, please look for that in Backpack Mail.
In Genius Hour, many students have really gone through a bulk of their beginning research and are contacting experts, polishing their knowledge, or thinking about products. The students are really growing as independent learners! In Social Studies, we researched the Stamp Act, Quartering Act, Proclamation of 1763, Boston Massacre, and Boston Tea Party! In Math, students learned more geometry skills as they learned about various polygons, vertical angles, adjacent angles, and angle measures among other things. In Reading, we learned how to identify the main idea, details, author’s purpose, and how to chose a good fit book! In Writing, students did a fun and enlightening descriptive writing experiment when they described aliens and then had another student act as an illustrator for their vision.
This week, the students will be focusing on planning and writing the first draft of their personal narratives! We will also finish up Unit 3 and have our Celebration of Learning on Thursday! In Social Studies, we will learn about the Intolerable Acts and then take our quick quiz on Wednesday! In Reading, students will continue to work on their nonfiction skills as they analyze different features of the genre. All of the students are also very excited to end our week on a Friday with a Halloween party!
