We have had another wonderful week in 5th grade! Don’t forget to follow our posts on Twitter, we share the fun all week long! The weather has allowed us to spend some time learning outside and we are really getting into the groove of 5th grade with a few weeks under our belts!
In the past week, we had our first Celebration of Learning in Math class. The students finished the test for Unit 1 on Wednesday and we started Unit 2 shortly thereafter by studying estimation. In Writing, we continued to work on writing with evidence from the text using the FACES model. In Reading, we continued to establish routines for Reader’s Workshop while focusing on making the invisible work of reading visible through reading notes and discussion. In Science, we studied producers by establishing our seed experiment and studying what plants need from an ecosystem to survive! If you follow your child on SeeSaw, you will be able to see their observations throughout the experiment!
This week, we will continue to solidify our Spelling routines for Words their Way. As we continue on in Unit 2 for math, the students will explore multiplication, probability, and relationships between numbers. In Writing, the students will begin to add more detailed evidence to their responses to literature. In Reading, we will begin to explore all of the genres of literature as we build our skills in academic discussions. In Science, our focus will shift to decomposers. You should have received a note from your child in Backpack Mail explaining our experiment on decomposers, we will be observing various foods in different states of decomposition as they are exposed to ecosystems. The electronic copy of the letter can be found here. On Friday afternoon, we will be sharpening our engineering skills by celebrating Caine’s Arcade and the International Day of Play. Your students will be coming home with their very own cardboard invention to celebrate the International Day of Play on October 1st!
