We had another exciting week ending with such a fun time at Back to School Night on Friday! Thank you to all of you who came for making it such a successful event! After talking with Mr. Murray and the school nurse, we have also added pears to the Snack List! In fifth grade, our spelling lists are completely personalized; students take a Pre-test, then select their own words based on their results and the pattern of the week. With that in mind, please know that their list is the only copy they get each week. The list needs to be at school on Tuesdays for practice and Thursdays for the test. I do take an extra copy and keep it at the school for when accidents happen, but losing or forgetting a spelling list involves a fine that comes out of their weekly classroom paycheck!
In Science, we learned more about the human body through experiments involving muscle fatigue, the Respiratory System, and the Circulatory System. In Math, we learned different algorithms, practiced solving word problems, and worked with probability. In Reading, we focused on writing with evidence and having intellectual conversations to respond to My Brother Sam is Dead. In Writing, the students continue to impress each other and me with their creative thinking and use of focused, descriptive language.
In Math, we will continue to learn about probability, and then move on to magnitude estimates and multiplication algorithms. As Writers, the focus will be on showing (not telling) in our writing. In Science, we will wrap up out unit, and then have our Celebration of Learning on Thursday! In Reading, we will continue to learn about the moral dilemmas of the Revolutionary War through the eyes of Tim in My Brother Sam is Dead. In Grammar, we will focus on interjections.
