Welcome to May Madness in 5th grade! We have plenty of fabulous and exciting events happening this week and for the rest of the month. We only have 25 school days left this year!
For the entire week, we will have an 8th grader from Thomas Middle School participating in our class through the Career Connections program. We are very excited to have our new helper in our class to help her learn about being a teacher. On Monday, we have an exciting Coding lesson with Mrs. Fajks. On Wednesday, we take our Spring Math MAP test! Right after that, we will have one final special activity with our Kindergarten buddies! I am also very excited because on Friday morning Google will be piloting their new program Google Expeditions in our school! Learn more about it here!
We accomplished a lot this week! We began our realistic fiction writing unit and learned about how to create emotion in realistic situations. In Reading, we shifted gears from Poetry to Nonfiction after taking our tests. The students focused on visual literacy and questioning skills needed for close reading of nonfiction texts. In Math, we learned about coordinate graphing before shifting gears to area and perimeter. The Bill of Rights unit is almost finished as we studied how these amendments affect our everyday lives. We also really enjoyed the Chicago Symphony Orchestra field trip on Friday! The Multicultural Fair was also a fabulous way to enjoy a Wednesday afternoon!
This week we will continue to study area, perimeter, and volume in various shapes and figures. We will also continue to explore the genre of realistic fiction writing. We are shifting into our Ecosystems Science unit this week and integrating that learning with our Reading curriculum as well! The two units will build upon each other to add schema in both subjects.
-We will have an unannounced Hard Lockdown Drill this week!
-The Fun Fair is this Friday! See you there!
-Dr. Bein will be here on Tuesday evening to discuss the incoming mobile classroom and long-term enrollment and space plans for Greenbrier! Read Mrs. Bingaman’s Friday Packet for more information on this and more!
