It is hard to believe I will only be sending out six more of these Weekly Updates before the year ends! We had another packed week in 5th grade! Thank you to everyone who attended STEAM Night; it was an exciting evening full of hands-on, problem solving experiences. Check out the video from STEAM Night! We also went on our Monkey Kingdom Field Trip, started Passion Time again, and kicked off our Read-A-Thon with a visit from the EdPowerment representatives. Please read the Friday packet for more information about these events, as well as important School Registration Information.
We finished Social Studies for the year and moved on to our final unit in Science! Students started identifying the types of energy they see all around them. In Math, we continued to practice fraction multiplication along with other skills in preparation for our test this week. In Reading, we finally met an important character while improving our response to literature skills. In Writing, students continued to develop their characters while thinking about how to construct a story with a logical plot.
This week we will take our Unit 8 Celebration of Learning focusing on operations with fractions. In Science, we will move into our hands-on experiments focusing on different forms of energy. While reading Among the Hidden, the students will focus on vocabulary strategies, summarizing, and the shape of plot elements. Their experience with the shape of a story will pour over into Writing as they begin constructing the major points of their short stories.
