I hope everyone is enjoying their Spring Breaks! I want the students to rest up because the end of our year is filled with lots of special events on top of lots of learning! We will be very busy in the next few months with just about 50 school days left in 5th grade.
Our class won the Golden Gator award for most school spirit during Crazy Hair/Hat Day last week! Thank you to all family members who helped the students get ready for all of the fun Spirit Week outfits. In preparation for National Poetry Month, we spent a week diving into poetry during Reading time. Dedicating an entire week to poetry in addition to reading poems throughout the year has really helped us build a culture of poetry appreciation. In Writing, students took some time to create various presentations for their Personalized Learning presentations. Students had a wonderful time sharing what they learned on Friday during Passion Time Presentations! In Social Studies, students finished up applying their knowledge of our country’s basic principles to a new post-apocalyptic government’s constitution. They were very creative and thoughtful about their new governments! In Grammar, we focused on run-on sentences and fragments so that we can recognize when they accidentally slip into our own writing. In Math, we focused on the order of operations and exponents among other topics.
In the week after Spring Break we will be very busy since we have Friday off! In Math, we will be finishing up our Unit 7 skills and then taking the Celebration of Learning before the weekend. In Writing, we will be preparing to become authors who do very detailed creative writing. This is always a very fun unit for students to stretch their creative muscles. In reading, we will be preparing to read Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This is a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi thriller, which keeps students on the edge of their seats! Students will be focusing on challenging vocabulary, comprehension skills, elements of a story, and some deep themes. In Social Studies, we will transition to learning about Manifest Destiny through our textbooks and some exciting cross-classroom research in the LMC.
