Hello 5th Grade Families!
Our class had so much fun at the Read-A-Thon on Friday! Thanks to everyone’s donations, we were able to donate $250 and 25 boxes of gently used books to Open Books in Chicago! We also sent off our manuscript for our Class Book. Everyone is very excited to see our work get published!
Last week, we prepared for the PARCC test by practicing our research writing skills in conjunction with composing within a given time period. Dr. Lynn also helped us practice our test taking skills in order to get ready for both the Math and the ELA PARCC tests! In Reading, we started our Poetry unit and began to learn about the various structures Poetry can utilize. In Math, we took a final quiz in Unit 6 and moved on to Unit 8 to continue our experience with fractions. We will revisit Unit 7 when we do Hands-On Algebra later this year. We also started Social Studies by learning about the Second Continental Congress.
This week, we will spend more time learning about the Second Continental Congress and the Declaration of Independence in Social Studies. We will also continue our work with fractions in Unit 8 by learning more about adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as multiplying fractions. In Reading, we will explore how figurative language allows poetry to evoke strong images. In Writing, we will transition into learning about persuasive writing. This is the last week before PARCC testing begins, so stay tuned for the schedule and adjustments to Specials!
