It was so lovely to see so many of you at Gator Rock! Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to make the event a success! We had a fun-filled week in 5th grade! Make sure to check out our Twitter for photos and updates from our classroom.
This week, all 5th graders will be taking the CogAT assessment on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 10:30. This will give valuable insight into your child’s cognitive abilities, and some of the data will be used in the decision making process for Advanced Language Arts placement in middle school. You have already received more detailed information about this in the Winter Assessment Update Letter from SchoolMessenger, but if you have any questions, please feel free to email me. For more information on Advanced Language Arts or Advanced Math Placement, please click the links.
We have also finally received our published class book! If you ordered a copy for your child, it will come home on Thursday. We will be having a Book Launch Party and putting a signed copy in the LMC on Thursday morning; the students are very excited! If you did not order a copy or would like to order more copies, the company has extended the publishing date. A flyer will be going home in Backpack Mail with information on how to order another copy online!
Last week, the students polished up their writing skills by learning how to quote dialogue, use the literary present tense, and incorporate context in their responses. We also learned about Greek and Latin root words and the students analyzed their meanings with and without context clues. The students also enjoyed Sharing Day and hearing about each other’s Genius Hour projects. We started incorporating Hands-On Algebra skills into our Unit 7 work during Math! In Science, the students studied insulators as a material to protect or conserve heat.
This week, we will have our Valentine’s Day party on Friday afternoon! Please remember that if a child brings in valentines, we encourage them to bring one for all of their classmates. Please note that food-based valentines are not permitted. This week we have plenty of exciting events coming up including our Book Launch Party, Buddy Class activities, Valentine’s Celebration, 100th Day, CogAT testing, and the introduction of our Rube Goldberg projects! In between all of that, we will also be continuing to practice literature discussions, using evidence from the text, and summarizing while reading Liberation. Students will be working on using evidence from nonfiction and fiction sources to write PARCC-style responses. We will also be designing our own insulated bottles in order to test conserving heat in an ice bath. In Math, the students will be continuing to learn Hands-On Algebra!
